KNPC OUTLINES REFINERY PLANS
Kuwait National Petroleum Company outlined the contracting strategy and tender schedule for its planned fourth gas and condensate train at the Mina Al- Ahmadi Refinery. The pre tender meeting was held by 14 EPC Contractors which included USA based ABB Lummus Global , Fluor Corporation, Foster Wheeler, Washington Group International, Italy based Snamprogetti,, Technimont, Daelim Industrial Co, Korea, Hyundai Engg & Const Co, Korea,GS Engg & Const , Korea, SK Engg & Const, all of Korea, Petrofac, UAE, Technip, Paris,JGC Corp, Japan, Costain Oil & Gas, UK.
The estimated $800 Million train will have a capacity of 805 Million cubic feet a day of gas and 106,000 barrels a day of condensate. Both the gas and condensate will be produced from existing oil fields in north and southeast Kuwait. Upstream operator Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) currently flares 87 per cent of its associated gas production but aims to reduce this to 1 per cent. Delegates at the meeting were told that the original plan to also utilize gas from the contentious offshore Dorra field had been abandoned.
In a first for the local hydrocarbons sector, KNPC will let the contract on a front-end engineering and design (FEED) cum EPC basis. FEED will be carried out on a cost-reimbursable basis and then converted on a fixed-value open book estimate to EPC. According to KNPC, the tender will be issued by the end of June, with an award schedule for October.
UPGRADED WATER UNIT OPENED
Ministry of Energy inaugurated the first upgraded water desalination unit at South Shuaiba Station, which will have the capacity to produce an additional one million gallons of water daily.
There are a total of 6 Desalination units in Kuwait. The remaining five units at present produce five million gallons of water daily. These remaining five units are also to be upgraded to produce six million gallons a day.
Under secretary of Operation and Maintenance of Power and Water Desalination Plants Affairs Mr. Faisal Al- Mudhaf has stated that the up gradation will prolong the life of all distillation units and enable the operation for longer hours without any failure, adding that the total water production will increase by six million gallons daily when the program is completed.
SUBSTATION TENDER ISSUED
The Ministry of Energy has invited six international contractors to submit bids by 1st August to build a new 300/132 KV substation near Kuwait city. The 6 International contractors bidding are ABB, Europe; AE Power Systems with Hitachi Technologies Corporation both Japan; Areva T &D , France ; Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company, South Korea; Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Japan; Siemens, Germany. The estimated $86 Million contract calls for the supply and installation of the Green Zone W Substation over a period of 24 months. Contract awards are pending on a number of other substation contracts in the state including the Qurain W and Siddiq W 300/132KV substation projects for which Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Japan and Europe’s ABB are the respective low bidders.
SAG-D SYSTEM TO BE USED BY KOC- JO
Kuwait Oil Company along with Joint Operations are considering using the technology of Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage system for the extraction of Crude Oil for future requirements.
Pre-qualification for companies specializing in SAG-D technology will be done by KOC after which the tenders will be issued.
The proposal is still under the early discussion stages.
INECO TAKES METRO MASTERPLAN CONTRACT
Spain’s Ingegneria & Consultoria de Transporte (ineco) has won a master plan study contract covering the development of a new urban rail and metro network in the state of Kuwait. The master plan will cover the feasibility of a metro system in Kuwait City, traffic studies, revenue forecasting, route alignment and financing options, working on a pre-feasibility study completed last year by the US’ Parsons Brinckerhoff. The study will also evaluate the network’s possible interface with the planned GCC rail network. The client on the Master plan is the Ministry of Communications with the Transport Union.
